Horton Plains national park is located at an elevation of 2,100–2,300 m (6,900–7,500 ft) and is the highest plateau in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The park encompasses montane grassland and cloud forest with rich biodiversity and beautiful landscape. It is fascinating that most of the tree trunks and branches inside the park are ornamented with colorful ferns, lycopodium, lichens, and orchids some of which are endemic to the region. Large herds of Sri Lankan Sambar deer are the dominating mammals in the park along with many species of resident and endemic birds adapted to the environmental conditions of the park.
The sheer 4000 ft drop at World’s End and Baker’s Falls are the other attractions of Horton Plains and the area is renowned for moderate to extreme hiking trails. Thotupola Mountain Kirigalpoththa Mountain, Worlds end Bakers fall circuit, and Bambarakanda to Ohiya vice versa through Devils Stair Case are among the popular hikes around the park.
Horton Plains National Park is situated 28km from Nuwara Eliya and the two entrances of the park are located in Ohiya (8 Km from Ohiya) and Pattipola (6 km from Pattipola – Ambewela)
